FAQs
Why did you create this Memorial?
The Memorial was a way of bringing the Iraq war into focus on a daily basis. Americans need to be more directly engaged with a war that is being fought in our names, with our tax dollars, putting at risk the lives of our young people. How we feel about the decisions that got us there is immaterial. We believe that the Memorial accomplishes this. It is a graphic reminder that our soldiers are dying – in growing numbers … every day.
What has been the public reaction?
We get a wide range of responses. Few object to the Memorial because it is respectful, neutral and thought provoking. A few people have asked why, with all the complexities of this war, it couldn’t be more elaborate. But in its simplicity, even very small children respond to it.
What has been the political response?
Almost none, actually. Then again, we haven’t seen candidates using it as a background for their campaigns either.
What was the motivation for the image?
We wanted something that was simple, clear and respectful. It also had to be able to grow, yet maintain its message and integrity. As a piece of public art it is intended to stimulate people to think, while not telling them how to think. We feel it fulfills this purpose. |
